Nutritional Counseling
The VNA home care team includes registered dietitians. Upon the recommendation of a visiting nurse or a client's doctor, in-home consultations are available to assist in variety of ways:
- Disease management
VNA dieticians provide nutritional education for clients who have been diagnosed with heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and other conditions that require dietary modifications.
- Food/drug interactions
Our dieticians educate clients about possible interactions between their specific prescription medicines and certain foods.
- Compromised oral intake
VNA dieticians provide their expertise to determine the nutritional needs of patients who require feeding tubes and assess the nutritional requirements of patients believed to be at nutritional risk based upon various factors such as age, gender and standard body weight indexes.
- Home health aide training
Our dieticians participate in the formalized training of our certified home health aides. They ensure that all aides have a sound understanding of nutritional fundamentals and common dietary modifications such as low salt and low fat diets. They also provide training in the proper techniques to be used with clients who require feeding assistance and are sometimes called upon to work one-on-one with home health aides who serve clients with specific needs.
