Home Health Aides
Our caring aides deliver a helping hand with essential life services, along with words of encouragement, reassurance and comfort. In fact, certified home health aides from the VNA of Northern NJ (VNA) have made it possible for thousands of area residents to return home with confidence in the aftermath of an illness or injury or remain safely in their homes despite advanced age, chronic illness or a disability. Our aides work in coordination with primary caregivers who are caring for aging parents or providing senior home care for any other loved ones.
Under the supervision of a visiting nurse who establishes an individualized plan, VNA home health aides provide:
- Personal care - bathing, dressing, hair care, oral hygiene and denture care, shaving, nail care, toilet assistance. catheter or ostomy care, as well as oral temperature, pulse and respiration checks
- Activities of daily living - assistance with rising from and getting into bed or a chair, walking, home exercise and compliance with oral medications
- Homemaking activities - Bed making and linen changes, light housekeeping, laundry, meal assistance including preparation and clean-up
- Companionship and communication - Socialization, conversation, letter writing, reading to or for clients and answering the phone
- Chores and errands - laundry and dry cleaning, grocery shopping, pharmacy pick-up and accompanying clients to essential appointments
All VNA home health aides must:
- Complete a comprehensive training program
- Pass a thorough background and reference check
- Obtain state certification
- Receive ongoing in-service training
- Perform their work under the direction of a visiting nurse
- Be sensitive to the specific needs and preferences of their clients and those who serve as primary caregivers
